French Chateau

French Chateau

Project Overview

Mastered construction for this grand chateau. Nor-Son’s creative craftsmanship was called on to create traditional architectural details with modern construction techniques. Our background in home design and architecture helped us in our role as general contractor on this project. Because construction began before the design was finalized, it was up to us to plan the build to accommodate different materials and finishes.

An old-world chateau meets Northwoods style. The timeless look of this estate is achieved with Wisconsin stone covering the entire exterior and main interior rooms. Reclaimed hand-hewn oak and poplar was sourced from Indiana and used in the structural truss systems in the great room and porte-cochere, lending a historic ambiance that complements the traditional architectural style. Black walnut hardwood floors and rustic timbers accentuate the antique decor.

“We have had the pleasure of working with Nor-Son for 40 years. During that time, we have had no less than 10 projects perfectly and professionally completed by the Nor-Son team. One of those projects was the building of our Dream Chateau on Lake Nisswa. The property was purchased in 1943 by my family, and I had the privilege of growing up on that property in Nisswa. The Chateau was the dream of my wife Penny and me for many years.  We were enamored with a certain style of architecture called Adirondack Style which is quite prominent in upstate New York.  It was particularly used often for the very wealthy people who lived close by in New Your City.  When we approached Nor-Son with this request they said “We can do that”— and so that they did. They collaborated with an Architect in Lake Placid to be sure they captured the essence of what we wanted, and in doing so made several trips East to look at homes built in that style.” — Lee and Penny, Homeowner
